Research Ethics Policy for Chung-Ang Saron

Article 1 [Objectives]

These guidelines are intended to prevent author misconduct and to define and observe the research ethics in the publication of Chung-Ang Saron of the Institute for Historical Studies at Chung-Ang University.

 

Article 2 [Subjects of Application]

The regulations apply to all authors who submit to this journal.

 

Article 3 [Probity of Researchers]

1. Authors must respect others’ ideas, contents, or results. Fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism are prohibited from the proposal, performance, and results of research.

2. Articles submitted to this journal must be previously unpublished work. Duplicated publication is not allowed.

3. Authors should not plagiarize others’ own works.

4. Questionable research practices: Co-research works cannot be reduced to individual works for submission.

5. When authors are submitting a manuscript, they must submit a written oath of observance of Research Ethics that confirms this manuscript is neither a duplicate of a previously published work nor a plagiarized work.

6. The authors should not falsify or hide their affiliation or position. The author information of the paper shall be filed and preserved. 

7. The authors should not violate research ethics by marking inappropriate authorship.

Examples of inappropriate authorship are as follows.

1) When authorship is granted although there is no contribution to the research contents or results.

2) If authorship is not granted although there is a contribution to the research contents or results.

3) When the student’s thesis is published or presented in an academic journal with professor’s name only.

8. The author should not commit research misconduct by co-author who are related to the author. The range of a related person is minor(age under 19) or a family member.

9. Authors shall be responsible for the paper and should use turn-it-in (http://turnitin.com, http://www.turnitin.com/ko) for English papers to conduct a plagiarism check about papers.

1)      If the test results show that the (self) plagiarism rate is more than 20%, the paper can receive a “Rejection(D)” decision regardless of the results of the screening by the three judges.

2)      In order to publish a paper in this journal, the plagiarism test result must be less than 15%.(When authors submit a final paper, a confirmation of the results must be attached.)

 

Article 4 [Definition of Terms]

1. Research misconduct includes fabrication, falsification, and plagiarism during the proposal, performance, reporting, and publication of research, as follows:

1) “Fabrication” is making up data or results that do not exist.

2) “Falsification” is distorting contents or research results by manipulating materials or processes or by changing or omitting data.

3) “Plagiarism” is the appropriation of another person's ideas, contents, or results without appropriate approval or citation.

2. Questionable research practices are as follows:

1) Publishing an author’s same work to another journal in same field of study without appropriate citation.

2) Obstructing inquiry about oneself or other persons suspected of misconduct or harming the informant.

 

Article 5 [Research Ethics Committee]

1. A research ethics committee shall be formed by the Institute for Historical Studies at Chung-Ang University to deliberate ethical matters.

2. The committee consists of about 10 members, including the deputy chief of the Institute, editorial director, research director, and editorial board members.

3. The head of the committee is appointed by chief of the Institute, and the deputy head of the committee and assistant are elected from among the committee members.

4. The committee members are appointed by the head of committee, and the term of a member is one year, but it can be renewed.

 

Article 6 [Operation of the Committee]

1. The committee can be assembled by the head of the committee when a request of the chief of the Institute is made or based on a decision of the head of the committee.

2. Committee meetings are attended by more than half of the members, and decisions are made by more than half of participants’ approval.

3. If necessary, the committee head can demand data or a report from the research director or managing director during inquiry.

4. Members must keep all deliberation matters confidential.

 

Article 7 [Function of the Committee]

The committee shall deliberate the following matters:

1. Matters related to research ethics that inform against articles, planning, and reports related to this journal.

2. Accusations of probity of research related to this journal.

3. Inquiries about misconduct related to the journal.

4. Matters related to research ethics referred by the research director or managing director and that are related to research projects connected to the Institute.

 

Article 8 [Penalties]

1. When a violation of research ethics related to the journal is claimed, the committee must take appropriate inquiry and measure of the suspicion.

2. The inquiry into a violation of research ethics must be kept confidential and should not be against the interests of the Institute and the journal.

3. The person suspected of violating research ethics has the right to defend against the committee’s decision and the committee must appropriately guarantee that right.

4. The committee can summon the person suspected of violating research ethics to give the opportunity for defense, if necessary.

5. The result of the inquiry into the violation must be reported to the Institute, and records of the inquiry shall be preserved by the Institute for five years after measure is done.

6. If the article is finally judged research ethics violation (duplicated or plagiarized/related person co-author), the result is announced and actions are taken as follows:

1) Manuscripts that violate research ethics will be rejected in the first screening. In the case of published articles, they will be deleted from the journal’s database, and relevant academic institutions will be notified.

2) Authors who violated research ethics will be restricted from submission for the ensuing five years.

3) Notify the involved organizations where the related person co-author have made unfair benefit.

 

 

Supplements

1. The above policy applies from December 2007 with the publication of Chung-Ang Saron no. 26.

2. Matters not mentioned by this regulation shall be decided by custom.

3. The revised policy applies from June 2010 with the publication of Chung-Ang Saron no. 31.

4. The revised policy applies from December 2019 with the publication of Chung-Ang Saron no.50.

5. The revised policy applies from December 2020 with the publication of Chung-Ang Saron no.52.

6. The revised policy applies from June 2021 with the publication of Chung-Ang Saron no.53.
