Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the operation and harms of martial arts recognized by Silhak scholars in the realities of Joseon in the 16th and 17th centuries, and to introduce for the first time a method for recruiting talents through martial arts suggested by Silhak scholar Hong, Jung Sam, who is not well known in academia.

The 17th century was a time when Confucian scholars came up with the theory of national reconstruction in order to overcome the reality of a rural society ravaged by conflicts.

Hong, Jung Sam lived in Asan, a Hoseo region, for about 30 years after passing Sama Examination (司馬試) in the 14th year of King Hyeonjong (1673) and before entering the central political world as a scholar in the 32nd year of King Sukjong (1706). In addition to the Recommendation system (薦擧制), as a method of recruiting talents, the personnel system reform by suggesting specific “Regulation” (節目) for each such as Myeonggyeong Chwisa (明經取士), Jesul chwisa (製述取士), and Gungma Chwiin (弓馬取人), which are conducted in the Civil Service Examination System (科擧試). wanted to complete.

In this paper, Hong Jung Sam examines the perception of radish at the time of the 17th century, and furthermore, suggests that the contents of Mugwatongjeolmok」 that he proposes to hire talented people in Byeongseo or Gyeongseo rather than those skilled in martial arts. can be checked.

This work is considered to have meaning that, unlike the contents of the no-gwa reform plan presented by a series of Silhak scholars such as Bangye Ryu, Hyung Won, Seong-ho Yi, Ik, Sunam Ahn, Jeong Bok, and Dasan Jeong, Yak Yong, there was a discussion about the no-gwa reform within the rural communities.

As described above, Hong Jung Sam, through the writing of Hyangyak Tongbyeon 『鄕約通變』, emphasizes the importance of human resources in governing the country as a way to correct the disordered discipline of rural society, and especially to overcome the evils of the personnel system such as the no task system. It is appreciated in that it contains.
